About this book
Love In Earnest
Author: John Gambril Nicholson
Year: 1892
This is the second issue of Love in Earnest: Sonnets, Ballades, and Lyrics. The ballad Of Boy's Names includes the name Ernest; is thought to be the origin of a similar pun in The Importance of Being Earnest. As an extra note, there's minimal evidence that earnest was used at the time as slang for homosexual. Aleister Crowley was fond of making up stories about secret meanings in Oscar Wilde's plays, so Crowley could have been this rumor's originator.
