Note that at the bottom of the receipt, the acknowledgement for payment was written in backhand. Using backhand to emphasize, set apart, and differentiate single words, phrases, or sections was common in wills, deeds, and other legal papers of much earlier dates. However, it was somewhat uncommon in receipts such as these until a time when backhand was taught in commercial business colleges. Receipt from Lombard & Co (Ephraim Lombard and Jacob H. Lombard) of Boston, MA for one grindstone of 750 lbs to the Boston & Providence R. R. Co.
