Capt. William P. S. Porter, of Freeport (ME), commanded the 2033-ton John A. Briggs (Ship) at the time this log-book was written, but he does not seem to be the author. Porter had been mate under the vessel's first master, Capt. Rufus S. Randall, and served as captain himself from 1881 to 1886. John A. Briggs (Ship) was built at Freeport (ME) in 1878 by Briggs & Cushing. She was lost in 1909 while under tow off Barnegat (NJ). Vessel and master identified through accession records and F. C. Matthews' writings. This log, kept aboard John A. Briggs (Ship), documents part of a voyage from San Francisco (CA) to Liverpool (ENG) with wheat, and a voyage from Liverpool to New York with salt. The log begins partway through the first voyage, after a storm which had claimed one life, injured several seamen, and destroyed the original log-book by bursting into the room where it was kept. After arrival at New York on the second voyage, the Briggs was towed to Philadelphia to unload. This is a standard log-book kept in a printed form. Mention is made of the seamen's injuries and illnesses, storm damage, vessels sighted, food, and the birth of a daughter to the Captain's wife aboard the vessel. P
