He was gazetted to the Royal Field Artillery (RFA) in December 1915 and after a period as a gunnery instructor became attached to a newly forming Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery (RGA). He served in France and Flanders from May 1917 until killed in action by a shell on 5th February 1918.
