Maria Sarah (Higgins) Murphy, was the daughter of Elisha and Sarah D. (Storer) Higgins of Bath (ME). In 1874 she married Capt. James F. Murphy (1850-1912), also of Bath; they had two children who survived childbirth, Jane Sewall and James Wilder. The latter became a shipmaster at 20. The 3,407-ton Shenandoah (Four-mast bark) was built at Bath (ME) in 1890 by master builder Elisha P. Mallet for Arthur Sewall & Co.; an image of the vessel decorated U.S. masters license certificates in the 1890s. She was sold for a barge in 1910 and foundered after a collision in 1915 off Fire Island (NY). Capt. Murphy commanded her at time of diary. This journal consists of two long, diary-like letters recording voyages in Shenandoah (Four-mast bark) from Liverpool (ENG) to San Francisco (CA) with coal, and return to Liverpool.
