Booth notes on the letter "the small business of the Mint would rather warrant the discharge than selection of female hands." James Curtis Booth (1810-1888) was Melter & Refiner at the United States Mint in Philadelphia. The James Booth papers are held by the Science History Institute in Philadelphia.
