The ledger of Jacob H. Whisler. Included in the ledger are a February 13, 1866 inventory of goods for a LeClaire, Iowa photography business, a second inventory dated June 8, 1868, the 1869 costs of building the Christian Chapel in Buffalo, Captain W. L. Clark's account with the Christian Church, and an 1868 list of income and expenses for the business of Whisler and Green of LeClaire. According to the book History of Scott County , Jacob was born in 1831 in Virginia. He came to Iowa in 1852 and lived in Cedar County, Bellevue, and then Maquoketa. He worked on farms and taught school. In 1864 he was drafted for the army but bought a substitute. He was appointed a minister of the Church of Christ in 1866 and held meetings in Illinois and Iowa. In 1869 he was put in charge of organizing Buffalo's Church of Christ. He was known as an "earnest temperance worker" and a "strong prohibitionist". In 1882, when History of Scott County was published, he was still living in the eastern part of Buffalo.
