John Graves, of Topsham (ME), was son of Charles Graves. He was a seaman on the William P. Frye (Four-mast bark); this may have been his first deepwater voyage. He later returned to Topsham and married Bertha Staples. He worked most of his life for Maine Central Railroad. Twin brother William also went to sea. The 3,374-ton Frye was steel hulled, built in 1901 at Bath (ME) by Arthur Sewall & Co. Her master at the time of this diary was Capt. Joseph E. Sewall (1854-1925) of Bath. The Frye was destroyed by a German cruiser in 1915, the first U.S. vessel sunk in World War I. This diary, kept in a blank notebook, begins at Bath (ME) with the author helping to outfit the William P. Frye (Four-mast bark) for her first voyage. He recorded voyages to New York, to Shanghai (CHN), and t?wards San Francisco (CA). There are references to other crew, food, leisure activities, personal injuries, a song, disinterest in sailing, and "spliced the main brace."
