Jesse Hawley (1773-1842) is credited as being the first to propose an inland canal connecting the Hudson River to Lake Erie. Today, we know it as the Erie Canal. His series of 14 essays, originally published under the pen name Hercules in 1807 in the Genesee Messenger , do not appear to be in print today. They were reprinted as an appendix to Memoir of DeWitt Clinton , by David Hosack (1829). Those 14 essays, beginning with Hosack's comments, are collected here.
