Notes are from 1883-1897.¶Willis Linn Jepson is known as the "father of California Botany" and is the namesake of the Jepson Herbarium at University of California, Berkeley. Jepson dedicated his life to studying California's flora. He collected extensively all over the state, making more than 20,000 collections between 1883 and 1945 and he carefully documented his collections in his 63 volumes of field books.¶Jepson’s field books are unique because he also used them as his diaries, and recorded information on the towns he visited, how he traveled throughout California, the people he met in the field, and how places and environments had changed since his last visit, so his field books provide a window into the changing California landscape between the 1880s to the 1940s.
