James Frederick Ferrier was a Scottish metaphysical writer and philosopher born in Edinburgh in 1808. He is known for introducing the term "epistemology" in philosophical English, as well as coining the term "agnoiology" for the study of ignorance. Ferrier was a prominent figure in the development of Scottish philosophy, and his ideas had a significant impact on the field of metaphysics. He was also a professor of civil history, moral philosophy, and political economy at various institutions, including the University of Edinburgh and the University of St Andrews. Ferrier's philosophical works include "Institutes of Metaphysic" and "Scottish Philosophy: The Old and the New," in which he presents his ideas on consciousness, self-consciousness, and idealism.
