No. 13-012, Box 11, 3534 PP Source: Walkerville Times Collection Notes: c. 1810; James Baby (baptized Jacques) was born in Detroit in 1763; he was a wealthy merchant, landowner, judge, and politician. During the War of 1812 he led the militia from Sandwich to Amherstburg; his family was forced to flee when the invading American army entered Sandwich on July 13th, 1812 and ransacked his house. He served as a member of the Legislative Council of Upper Canada for Sandwich from 1792 until his death in 1833. He was also appointed Inspector General (Treasurer) of Upper Canada in 1815.
