January 24, 1924: William Jennings Bryan delivered his lecture "Is the Bible True?" at Ryman Auditorium, Nashville, TN, after which 500 copies of the lecture were sent to Tennessee legislators; and Representative John Washington Butler, an admirer of Bryan, was one of the recipients. January 21, 1925: Representative Butler introduced in the House of Representatives TN House Bill 185, known as the Butler Act. Bryan's lecture was once again sent to members of the state legislature. January 28, 1925: The Butler Act passed the House. March 13, 1925: The Butler Act passed the Senate. March 21, 1925: Governor Austin Peay signed the Butler Act into law, making Tennessee the first state to ban the teaching of human evolution, thereby setting the stage for the Scopes trial.
