Cemetery listings of Europeans, mainly of the British, buried in India can be of absorbing interest and not the turgid morbid tomes they may appear to be at first sight. This is because such listings, when properly compiled and with accounts of the various lives listed, open a further window in to local and regional history. This upload, the first of several such listings to be uploaded, is the first, 1905, edition of Julian James Cotton's Inscriptions on Tombs or Monuments in the Madras Presidency, which lists European graves at different locations in the old Madras Presidency (which comprised virtually the four southern states of India but for some parts of the area with the Princely states). These listings were brought out for the various Presidencies of India from about 1900 to 1925 or 30, the prime impetus for their publication being the orders and exhortations of the Viceroy at the turn of the 20th Century, Lord Curzon, that such lists should be compiled for each area pof India as a matter of record and acknowledgement of the contributions and lives of various British subjects who worked and lived (and died) in the country.
