The author was Late Scouts Officer 8th (Service) Battalion Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. The Preface includes the wording "When men drawn straight from Civil Life have to be completely fitted to take their place in the firing line within periods varying from twelve to as little as three months, it is obvious that only a short portion of this time can be devoted to training any proportion of them in the duties of Infantry Scouts. But if the men selected have a natural aptitude for the work and are (like Signallers and Machine-gunners) kept entirely to that work once they are "off the square” and have fired their Musketry Course, there is no reason why they should not be turned into tolerably efficient scouts within a period of six weeks. This little book, therefore, is designed with this aim in view; and is the result of personal experience in Training the Infantry Scouts of different units in the New Armies of the Empire; added to a spell at the Front which has made it possible to appreciate the work required of trained Battalion Scouts in the present
