About this book

Industrial Survey of Newark, Licking County, Ohio

Author: The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company

Year: 1917

Report on Newark, OH produced by the Bureau of Industrial Surveys of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Co. in 1917. B&O’s Commercial Development Department presented a copy of the report to the Newark Chamber of Commerce. The Industrial Survey is a candid assessment of Newark’s current economic state in 1917 and its potential for growth. While the focus of the work is on transportation, manufacturing, banking, and commerce, there are lengthy sections on city government and utilities, as well as living conditions and labor relations in the city. The report utilizes sources available publicly, such as census records and municipal publications, yet supplemented that data with interviews and in-person appraisals of businesses and living and working conditions, providing a unique glimpse of the city’s past at an important period of expansion. The physical condition of the copy of the Industrial Survey is poor and many its inserts and attached files, such as the maps and pamphlets that were taped and glued to various pages, have been damaged with a few lost entirely. The extant inserts have been reproduced in their original order where possible.
