Index to Evans and Millard fulling and weaving mill ledger

Author: Russel Millard, Thomas Evans, Josiah B. Evans

Year: 1825

This is the index to the Evans and Millard fulling and weaving mill ledger (HSH ledger E.02 v.1) in the collections of the Historical Society of Haddonfield. It includes entries from 1825-1837. Other related ledgers contain invoices from 1825-1850 (HSH ledger E.02 v.2) and invoices from 1846-1849 (HSH ledger E.01). Russel Millard (circa 1797-1860) rented the mill from Thomas Evans and later his son Josiah B. Evans. The fulling mill was located on the south branch of today’s Cooper River, near where today’s Evans Mill Road in Haddonfield, NJ crosses the river. Evans had purchased the former Kay mill site by 1820, and operated a grist mill on one side of the dam. In 1826, he rented the fulling mill on the other side of the dam to Millard, according to the ledgers now in the collection of the Historical Society. In a newspaper of the time, Millard listed his services as including the carding, fulling and dressing of cloth. At the same mill, Abel Small conducted the weaving and making of carpet. The operation of the fulling mill continued until 1854, when the building was destroyed by fire. (The Evans grist mill continued to operate until 1897, and that building was destroyed by fire i
