Administrative correspondence collected by Henry N. Guernsey regarding the Homeopathic Medical College of Pennsylvania. The correspondence concerns faculty and financial matters due to faculty disagreements which ultimately led to the creation of a rival school in 1867. Also included is 1882 correspondence between Samuel Swan and W. M. James, both graduates of the Homeopathic Medical College of Pennsylvania, the former having a close relationship with Guernsey. Henry Newell Guernsey graduated from the New York University College of Medicine in 1844. After practicing medicine in New York, he moved to Philadelphia in 1856 and later became professor of Obstetrics and Diseases of Women and Children at the Homeopathic Medical College of Pennsylvania (1861 to 1869) and Chair of Institutes and Materia Medica (1871-1874). The Homeopathic Medical College of Pennsylvania was founded in 1848 to provide standardized training in the emerging system of medicine called homeopathy. In 1869 the Homeopathic Medical College of Pennsylvania and Hahnemann Medical College (founded in 1867) merged to create a new institution called Hahnemann Medical College of Philadelphia.
