When war was declared by Britain against Germany, on August 4, 1914, there was no New Zealand Army, in the strict sense of the word. The outline of one existed. This is the story of how a collection of men was molded into a fighting force to stand beside Imperial troops in the Great War. Aside from the mundane subjects of how to exist as a regimented group, the soldiers had to be taught the intricacies of infantry training, musketry, offensive and defensive tactics, trench warfare, bayonet fighting, and gas defense.
