This booklet is described as “illustrating the rise, growth, decline and recovery of the churches composing that body.” Recalling Jacob’s dream of “a ladder reaching from earth to heaven, on which the angels of God were ascending and descending” at the location Jacob then renamed “Bethel” (meaning “God’s house”), Clark then gives an account of the arrival of the Pilgrims on these shores, their devotion to their faith and worship of God, and then the eventual spread of their basic faith and the development of all the other Congregational churches on Cape Cod and the Islands up until Clark’s own time period. At the time of this discourse there were thirty Congregational churches in the Barnstable Conference. Rev. Joseph Sylvester Clark, D. D. (1800-1861) was born in Plymouth, Massachusetts. He was a Congregational minister and served the Congregational church in Sturbridge, MA, then was the Secretary of the Massachusetts Missionary Society for nearly twenty years. He then joined others in founding the library in Boston which is known today as the Congregational Library & Archives. Greatly interested in the history of Congregational churches and preserving their records, Clark subsequ
