The letters give details of military life; the fate of acquaintances; and Campbell's participation in various Civil War campaigns and battles, including Pea Ridge (Elkhorn Tavern) and Chickamauga. Many of the letters discuss politics and the military situation in the South, particularly in Kentucky and Missouri, during the early days of the war
