At the start of the war the Squadron was in Belgium and France, performing reconnaissance and also operating armoured cars, and later also bombing. The Squadron was then posted to the Dardanelles (Gallipoli). Samson then commanded the Seaplane Carrier HMS Ben-my-Chree May 1916-January 1917 which operated in the Mediterranean and other seas around the Middle East, until it was sunk by Turkish fire in the harbour of Castelorizo Island (Kastellorizo). His force also included HMS Raven and HMS Anne. Following the fire, he hunted in the Raven for the German raider Wolf (without success), before returning to England in May 1917.
