About this book
Featherston Military Training Camp NZEF
Author: Will Lawson
Year: 1917
In the later part of 1915, New Zealand constructed the Featherston Military Training Camp as an addition to its other training facilities. It was intended to house 4,500 men and 500 horses, in anticipation of national registration. It grew to accommodate over 8,000 soldiers. The camp included well-constructed wooden huts, cooking and eating facilities, religious and sports areas, and an expansion tentage area. Troops trained on rifles, machine guns, mortars, 18-pounder guns and 4.5-inch howitzers. It served as a prisoner of war holding area later.
