The flux density in an iron ring magnetised by a solenoid with which it is overwound is not uniformly distributed over the section, but is greater towards the inner edge owing to the shorter path which the flux there has to traverse. Richter has shown that under such circumstances the total hysteresis loss is less than if the distribution were uniform, provided that the hysteresis exponent lies between 1 and 2; the increase in loss per c.cm. where the flux is denser being more than counter balanced by the smallness of the volume occupied by it compared with that occupied by the less dense flux.
