Bessa, Pancrace (French, 1772-1846) Drawings for Mordant de Launay's Herbier général de l'amateur Paris, [1810], 1816-1827 90 watercolors on vellum, average size within gold border, 7 1/8 x 4 ½ inches, sheets, 10 9/16 x 8 5/16 inches; all are mounted; all are numbered in lower right corner in ink (correspond to plate number in Mordant de Launay’s Herbier general de l'amateur ); all are signed below drawing: “P. Bessa.” In four tan quarter morocco and marbled paper slip-cases. Spine height: 12 ¾ inches. Exhibited: four of the drawings, Geranium striatum (#9) , Allium album (#109) , Limonia trifoliata (#365) , and Tradescantia virginica (#422) , were exhibited in An Oak Spring Garland , Princeton University Library, October 12 - December 17, 1989, #26 (along with volume six of the printed work, #27). The drawings were part of a series of almost 600 used to illustrate Mordant de Launay's Herbier général de l'amateur , Paris, [1810], 1816-1827, of which the library has a copy. Some of these drawings were used again in Drapiez's Herbier de l'amateur de fleurs , Brussels, 1828-1835; (Nissen II: entries 2323-2324). Pancrace Bessa, a student of Redouté, was associated with the Musée d'Hist
