Turpin, Pierre Jean Francois (French, 1775-1840) Drawings and proof engravings for Francoise de la Roche’s Sea-Hollies , 1808 Circa 1808 Manuscript comprises of 21 pen, ink and wash drawings, measuring approximately15 x 11 ½ inches; inscribed with plant names below in pencil;13 proof (before-letters) engravings, plate marks measuring approximately 11 ½ x 9 inches; all tipped-in; most are signed. Bound in dark green three-quarter morocco and green cloth; spine stamped in gilt: “Turpin/Original Botanical Drawings.” Spine height:18 inches. Turpin was born in Vire and learned the basics of drawing in the local art school. He joined the batallion du Calvados at the age of fourteen and was shipped to San Domingo in the West Indies five years later. It was there that he met the botanist Pierre-Antoine Poiteau (1766-1854), who inspired Turpin’s fascination with flowers. In 1801 he met the German naturalist and explorer von Humbolt while he was in America.Turpin and Poiteau jointly illustrated von Humbolt’s work along with Duhamel Du Monceau’s second edition of Traité des Arbres Fuitiers (1808-1835).In 1834 he illustrated his own Flore Visuelle .
