The experiments here described were carried out in precisely the same manner as those on the 46’s cross-bred blend reported in Publication No. 36. As in that case, it is difficult to draw definite conclusions from the work in a number of different mills owing to the simultaneous operation of a number of factors. Of the latter, by far the most important is the personal one. Two different carding engineers will not necessarily achieve the same result with a given carding engine and further, will probably employ different methods when seeking the same end. The experiments on the cross-bred blend were interpreted as a convincing proof of the necessity of having at Torridon a woollen plant. Under conditions entirely free from the necessity of continuous running to maintain output, it will be possible to make alterations and adjustments so that one factor only may be varied at a time and ultimately the influence of the various factors may be determined.
