This travel brochure for the RMS Empress of Japan is filled with exquisite full colour illustrations depicting the luxurious and stately rooms of this classic CPR steamship vessel. The brochure is likely circa early 1930 as the ship was built in 1929 and launched in 1930. It makes reference to being launched December 17, 1929, and also the upcoming maiden voyage June 14, 1930. The ship was unable to predict the economic downturn of the Great Depression but managed to have a relatively long service life. Due to the Japanese attacks on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, the ship needed a new name. It was renamed to the RMS Empress of Scotland which it maintained to 1957. Thereafter it was sold to the Hamburg Atlantic Line operating under the name Hanseatic as a trans-Atlantic vessel. On September 8, 1966, the ship caught fire at New York and after inspection in Hamburg, the vessel was deemed beyond repair and scrapped. There were some subtle light pink pencil or ink doodles/writing on the back cover that have been digitally removed, along with a few pencil marks from the front cover.
