Author: Dr. Henry Peyrouf, commandant of New Madrid, ordered Dr. Pierre Antoine Laforge and Dr. Robert McCoy to investigate and arrest individuals mentioned in earlier declarations. An interpreter, Dr. Jean Charpeutier, was assigned to assist in the process.

The official record of the arrest of the Masons at Little Prairie and their trial at New Madrid was preserved in the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. The document was found among historian J.F.H. Claiborne’s papers. Although faded and difficult to read, the manuscript provided a thorough record of the events from the Masons being spotted at Little Prairie to their subsequent trial in New Madrid. The commandant at New Madrid who ordered the Masons be captured and tried, Don Henri Peyroux, the same authority who provided Mason his passport, did not understand English, the only language spoken by nearly all the witnesses who appeared before him. So, the trial was conducted in French and later translated into English by someone working for the Mississippi Department of Archives, according to Rothert.
