The Preface written in 1913 which appears in both editions says "The object of this book is to assist officers in the training of their companies for war, either indoors, on the musketry range, or in the field. The regulations dealing with this subject are necessarily limited to the enunciation of principles, and cannot include suggestions as to what might be done to suit any particular situation or ground, because the situations are so numerous and the ground varies so greatly that volumes would have to be written before the subject could be dealt with in any comprehensive manner.
