About this book
Colored Persons Directory H. H. Brown 1832
Author: H.H. Brown
Year: 1832
This is the Colored Persons Directory of Providence, Rhode Island, 1832. Often in old city directories (the precursors to the phone book) would put listings for people of color in different sections of the book, or would do something like put a star next to the name of a person of color. This had the advantage of differentiating white and black people of the same names, and in the case of Rhode Island differentiating white families from the descendants of their formerly held slaves. There were two black neighborhoods in Providence, one was called Hardscrabble and one was called Snowball.
