The following paper gives an account of the determination of the losses of material consequent upon the process of chlorination. Two methods, using bleaching powder and chlorine water respectively, have been employed. The range of concentrations covers both very mild and excessive treatment. It is shown that chlorination properly carried out does not involve large losses, particularly when the drastic nature of the process is remembered. The changes in weight due to bleaching by means of burning sulphur have also been found. The influences of chlorination and bleaching upon the regain of the wool have been investigated in detail. As an example of the results obtained the following excerpt from Table H is quoted. In this are shown the conditioned weights of samples which, previous to chlorination, weighed in the bone dry state 100 1bs. Figures are given for unchlorinated, mildly chlorinated, and excessively chlorinated samples. Two of the relative humidities and temperatures chosen correspond to the yearly averages of the conditions prevailing in the ordinary heated living room and out of doors. Publication No. 47
