Two page certificate printed with black ink and tacked together in the upper left hand corner. The document shows some brown discoloration, with heavier color from the tack's rusting. It is titled "Certificate of Health and Compliance with Quarantine" for the British Bark (ship) Galgate, captained by John Jones. The ship had sailed from the Port of Shanghai, and was on its way to the Port of Portland, presumably to pick up cargo for its return in 1897. The Galgate was built in 1888 by Whitehaven SB. Co., Ltd., England. It was operated by the Galgate Co., or the John Joyce Company. It was made of steel, had 4 masts, and considered a sailing vessel, or barque/bark. It weighed 2,356 tons. It was sunk by a German Uboat (U20 - Imperial German Navy) 190 miles from England on May 6, 1916. It was carrying a cargo of barley from Portland, OR to Falmouth, England.
