A record of fifty years' progress (Walter Reid, Bristol, 1909) An illustrated book charting the development of Bristol between the founding of the Western Daily Press (1858) and 1908, in the hope that 'a descriptive and pictorial record of what has been achieved may be helpful in stimulating further progress, and at the same time be useful to the future historian' ( Preface ). Published by the journalist Walter Reid and written by George Stone, a local historian and journalist, who ultimately became editor of the Western Daily Press . The volume contains hundreds of illustrations by Stone's colleague and friend, the Bristol artist Samuel J. Loxton . Many of which had originally appeared in local and regional newspapers. E-book digitised and uploaded by the Bristol Record Society . The BRS has also produced high-resolution jpg scans of many of Loxton's images and uploaded them to Wikimedia on a Creative Commons licence. These can be accessed from Loxton's Wikipedia page .
