This is a reprint of a book written by Arthur K. Hafen about his Grandfather John George Hafen. It was published in 1929. Note: on page 12, John George States that his fathers name is also John George, yet some records show his name as Hans George. This little sketch, rather personal in nature, is published with the hope that the ideals and characteristics of my grandfather and the experiences of his long life might stimulate those who read it, as his actions and his conversations have stimulated me. While it is written largely for his descendants, it is to be hoped that others who read it will feel compensated. His life was rather unique. He lived in the old world and in the new.; he helped to build an empire, and throughout he lived a life of service. He died in May, 1928, the last survivor in Santa Clara of the original Swiss company. For shortcomings or failure in any way to meet the expectations of the readers I am fully responsible.
