This book dates from 1849-1892 and is in the collection of the Hermann-Grima + Gallier Historic Houses, New Orleans, LA. Acc#1969.7.1. Its conservation (by New Orleans Book & Paper Lab) and digitization (by Heritage Werks Inc.) were funded by The Decorative Arts Trust in 2018-2019. The James Gallier Jr. Residence (now part of the Hermann-Grima + Gallier Historic Houses) acquired the Benson Ledger in 1970. The brown leather-bound account book lists over 3,700 deliveries, in the 1840s and 1850s (the most legible entries dating to 1859 and 1860), of paint, wallpaper, glass, and other materials to residences and businesses in New Orleans. The ledger records deliveries made by the Irish-born Benson Brothers, Joseph (c. 1818-1860) and John (c. 1827-1875). Beginning in 1848, the brothers were listed separately as painters in New Orleans city directories. In 1851, one “J. Benson” offered house, sign, and ornamental painting, and painting in imitation of wood and marble. From 1853 to 1855 only Joseph Benson is listed, at 132 Camp Street, as a house, sign, and ornamental painter. John appears again in 1856, and until 1860 the brothers are listed together as Benson Bros., painters, and Benson
