Obituary for James B. Avent, published March 27, 1881 in Pascagoula Democrat Star AVENT- On Wednesday March 23, 1881, after a long and painful illness, at the residence of Mr. James A. Stewart, in Harrison County, Mr. James B. Avent, aged 68 years and 9 months. "Judge" Avent, as he was familiarly called was a native of South Carolina, and moved to Mississippi in 1834. He was respected as a man of sterling virtues, honest, kind-hearted, and honorable in all his dealings with his fellow men. His memory will be cherished by a host of friends. A large concourse of citizens followed his remains to the grave. He was buried with Masonic honors by Polar Star Lodge No. 154, of which he had been a zealous and useful member. X.Y.Z.
