The Annual Messenger: Negro Missions, SVD was a magazine published annually by the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) from 1918 to 1919. The SVD, a Roman Catholic order focusing on missionary work since 1875, expanded its American missionary efforts to the South beginning in 1905. Succeeding the publication of The Colored Messenger (1916-1918), the Annual Messenger continued to promote the Society’s work among Black people in the South, solicit financial support for Southern missions, and advocate for the priesthood of Black men. It also reported on the activities of the SVD missions in Mississippi and Arkansas. The Annual Messenger ceased publication in 1919 due to production expenses. This publication changed titles and publication schedules several times from its inception in 1916 to its continued publication today.
