The modern form of the Koepsel permeameter is an instrument very similar in shape and size to a moving-coil ammeter. It gives direct readings of the magnetising force and the flux density. The moving part is a coil through which a constant current flows, and the deflection of this coil is used to measure the magnetic field. The magnetic circuit consists of a yoke with its ends joined by the test-piece. The middle of the yoke has a circular gap in which swings the test-coil for the measurement of the induction.
