Gough, Miss (English) An album of Indian plants, fruit, birds, and insects Madras, 1840-1843 Manuscript comprises 43 pencil, water-, and bodycolor drawings, each about 21 ½ x 30 inches, all tipped-in. Most are dated and inscribed as stated below. Inscribed on front free endpaper: “Original Drawings by Miss Gough, Daughter of Viscount Gough, Madras 1840-1843. About 80 varieties of Indian plants & flowers, Birds, Beetles, & Butterflies,” and a label in top right corner: “F.R. Registered Number D11976.” Bound in quarter red calf and marbled boards; tooled in gilt; spine gilt. In rust cloth box-case. Spine height: 31 ⅞ inches. Watermark: Ruse & Turners 1840. Drawings are inscribed: 1. “Rangoon Creeper. From our garden. Moogrin. Mulliapoo-Tamul. Madras. 20 April 1840.” 2. “Varigated Leaves. Madras. 10 th . June 1841 - from our Garden - taken from nature.” 3. “Lotus.” 4. “Trevong. Malangerra. Portugese. Lotus sent to me by Lady Gambier. 1842.” 5. “Name unknown. from our garden. very stiff, but taken from nature.” 6. “A sort of Partridge sent to me by my William by Capt. C.
