Lysons, Samuel attributed to (English, 1763-1819) An album of butterflies and moths Circa 1800 Manuscript comprises 130 water-, bodycolor, and pen and ink drawings, mounted on 20 album leaves, ranging in size from 1 ½ x 2 ⅝ to 7 x 5 inches; 9 blank leaves 22 ¼ x 17 ¼ inches. Some drawings are inscribed with the insect’s genus name. Two species are identified with their place of origin: “Italy,” and “Switzerland Alps.” Bound in quarter dark green morocco and gray boards. Bookplate: “From….the Library of Lindsay Fleming Aldwick Grange Bognor Regis….Sussex.” Watermark in on album leaves: J Whatman 1794. Original held by the Oak Spring Garden Foundation, Upperville, Virginia. This resource is in the public domain and may be used without restriction, however, attribution is customary and requested.
