News report on the founding session of the foundation convention of the American Railway Union, held in Chicago at the Greene Hotel from April 11-17, 1893. This report includes a long direct quote from the prime mover behind the organization, Eugene V. Debs, editor of Locomotive Firemen's Magazine, who noted: "The union will be formed of all classes of railway employees working on trains, tracks, in shops, offices, anywhere. They will be organized by the branch of work they do. ... There will be no benevolent features. It is formed for mutual protection and the promotion of the interests of the working railroad men. Its home will be in Chicago." Published in the USA prior to 1923, public domain.
