Pettman, M. (English) Album of English plants 1833-1841 Manuscript comprises 131 watercolors (some with pencil) of plants mounted to album’s 152 leaves, average size 4 ⅞ x 4 ⅞ inches; drawing of a “Quintaine” (Quintain) mounted on recto of back free endpaper, 3 ¾ x 3 ¾ inches.The drawings are inscribed with the Latin and English nomenclature, the date it was executed, and the location where the plant was found. Inscribed on verso of front free endpaper: “M. Pettman 1833,” and below: “Kate Pettman Spotlands Augst. 2..1875.” Bound in maroon morocco; re-backed with original spine; stamped in blind and gilt on covers; lettered in gilt on spine: “Wild Flowers Vol. I.” Spine height: 6 ⅛ inches. Many of the plant samples were taken from Cooper’s Hill, Englefield Green, Priests Hill, Windsor Park, Malvern, etc.The artist has also used a numerical system to identify the class and order of each plant in the upper corners of the drawings. Quotes pertaining to particular plants from Shakespeare, the Bible, and Ben Jonson are also inscribed on various leaves. Original held by the Oak Spring Garden Foundation, Upperville, Virginia.
