Edouard Foa was the preeminent French big game hunter, African naturalist, prolific photographer, and author of 9 books in the late 1800s. But despite his unmatched reputation, he has curiously garnered little historical recognition outside of France. In 1891, the National Museum of Natural History of France engaged Foa to gather a wide selection of African wildlife for a proposed African still-life exhibition to be permanently staged in Paris. To that end, over four years, Foa covered 7200 African miles, mostly on foot, from the eastern Zambesi delta to the western mouth of the Congo River. He risked every form of tropical disease and death from dangerous creature as he gathered the elements of his commission. Foa succeeded in his efforts on the museum's request with one of the world's finest collections of still-life African fauna on display. In his marvelous book, 'After Big Game in Central Africa' Foa wrote of the expedition's escapades. His account is full of hard, almost fatally earned bush knowledge and deadly encounters with Africa's untamed denizens.
