London: C. W. Daniel, Ltd., 1917. — 30 c. S. Gertrude Ford was an English poet, journalist, and suffragette, best known for her pacifist poems published during World War I. Little is known about her life. Born in Rossendale Valley, Lancashire, her birth date remains a mystery. It is believed that she was the sister of Cicely Ford (1876-1960) of Girton College, a social worker and deaconess. Gertrude experienced a childhood disability that prevented her from attending school, leading to her being educated at home. Despite being confined to her home, she maintained a strong focus on others. As a member of the Methodist church, Gertrude frequently contributed to various church publications, and the connections she made within the church proved invaluable during the early stages of her literary career. Gertrude's first poems appeared in the "Blackburn Weekly Telegraph," where fellow Methodist T. P. Tizema J. P. served as editor. In 1902, Rev. H. J. Shingles commended her work in an introductory article published by the same newspaper. He would later become her literary, philosophical, and spiritual mentor.
