The author was a trainee nurse who travelled to Serbia in 1915 with a volunteer medical unit under the Serbian Relief Fund, known as the 2 nd British Farmers’ Unit (This name was due to the funding of the Unit as it was funded by money raised by farmers (British Farmers Red Cross Fund). Hence the title of the book. The unit consisted of a group of about 45 to run a surgical base hospital, a m ilitary hospital under the control of the Serbian Military Medical Authorities. The group travelled to Posharevatz, sixteen hours journey from Nish where they were provided with a big empty school to establish a military hospital. Subsequently this hospital was closed and the Unit moved to Belgrade, until the city fell to the Germans in October 1915.
