The device of holding the instrument with the moving element horizontal and sliding a weight along the needle until the desired deflection is obtained with the needle horizontal is not suitable for such a purpose or for such instruments as watt-hour meters. The method here described is suitable for such a purpose or for the measurements of any small horizontal force. A bob with vertical pointer attached is suspended vertically by a silk fibre from a support so that it can move just over a concave spherical surface of radius 1 m.
