About this book
1855 RI City Library Constitution And Catalogue
Author: Rock Island City Library and Reading Room
Year: 1856
The Rock Island (Illinois) Public Library is proud to make these digital copies of historic documents and records available, using this online venue, for the interest of the general public and the use of historians and scholars. The original copies of these documents are currently kept in the downtown/Main branch of the library in its Illinois Room archive. This document is a scan of the Constitution and Catalog of the earliest subscription library for the City of Rock Island, Illinois, organized in September 22, 1855, as the community responded to a call for a library written in the June 23, 1855, issue of The Rock Island Republican newspaper by its editor, Joseph B. Danforth, Jr. This was the nascent Rock Island City Library. Over the next 17 years it developed to become the Rock Island Public Library--the first public library to open in the state of Illinois. The library's current address is: Rock Island Public Library 401 19th Street Rock Island, IL 61201
